Founder FAQs

 What makes a winning pitch?

There is no single formula, but strong pitches tend to share several characteristics:

  • Clear explanation of the problem being solved
  • Strong understanding of the target customer and market
  • Evidence of traction or validation
  • Clear differentiation from competitors
  • A confident and authentic founder story
  • A memorable opening and closing

Investors are often assessing both the opportunity and the founder’s ability to execute.

How can I make my pitch memorable when judges are hearing many startups in one day?

Focus on clarity rather than complexity.

Some techniques include:

  • Starting with a compelling customer problem
  • Using a memorable story or example
  • Explaining your value proposition in simple language
  • Showing why your solution matters now
  • Ending with a strong final message that reinforces your vision

The most memorable pitches are often the clearest, not the most complicated.

I’m pitching a highly technical product. How do I make it understandable in three minutes?

Avoid leading with technical features.

Instead:

  1. Explain the problem.
  2. Explain why it matters.
  3. Explain how your solution changes the outcome.
  4. Introduce the technology only after the audience understands the

Investors do not need every technical detail during the pitch; they need enough information to understand the opportunity.

I’m a solo founder. Will I be disadvantaged under the team criteria?

No.

While investors often value strong teams, many successful startups begin with a single founder.

Focus on demonstrating:

  • Relevant expertise
  • Ability to execute
  • Understanding of the market
  • Access to the skills and support needed to grow the business

Do investors care more about the idea or the team?

Both matter, but early-stage investors often place significant weight on the founding team.

Investors typically look for:

  • Founder-market fit
  • Ability to learn and adapt
  • Resilience
  • Execution capability

A strong team can successfully adapt an idea; a weak team may struggle even with a strong idea.

Why do judges ask about market research and validation?

Investors want evidence that a real problem exists and that customers are willing to pay for a solution.

Market validation can include:

  • Customer interviews
  • Pilot projects
  • Revenue
  • User growth
  • Partnerships
  • Letters of intent

The stronger the validation, the lower the perceived risk.

How do I balance market opportunity with product strength?

Demonstrate both:

  • A meaningful market opportunity
  • A solution that is differentiated and capable of winning in that market

Investors want to see that the problem is large enough and that your team has a credible way to solve it.

What materials should I bring to the event?

Recommended materials include:

  • Digital pitch deck
  • Business cards (optional)
  • Product demo (if applicable)
  • Marketing materials or one-pager
  • QR code linking to your website, LinkedIn profile, or pitch deck

Keep materials simple and easy to access.

Should I include QR codes in my presentation or booth?

Yes.

A QR code can help direct attendees to:

  • Your website
  • LinkedIn profile
  • Product demo
  • Pitch deck
  • Contact information

Make it easy for investors and attendees to continue the conversation after your pitch.
