Imed Gallouzi
Dr. Imed Gallouzi is a Professor of Bioscience and Chair of the KAUST Center of Excellence for Smart-Health in Saudi Arabia. He previously spent over twenty years at McGill University as Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from University Montpellier II, France (1998) and completed postdoctoral training at Yale University (1998-2001). From 2002 to 2012, he held a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Cellular Information Systems.Professor Gallouzi is a renowned scholar in mRNA biology, particularly in posttranscriptional mechanisms and cellular stress responses. His notable achievements include co-discovering stress granules in 2000 and linking stress granule formation to cancer-induced muscle wasting prevention in 2012—recognized as one of the top 10 discoveries by the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute. He co-authored the First Canadian Edition of BIOCHEMISTRY (Nelson Education, 2013).His academic career spans prestigious institutions across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. In 2014, he joined KAUST as a visiting professor, establishing the Molecular and Cellular Biology teaching lab. He later led the establishment of the Life Science Division at HBKU in Qatar, founding the College of Health and Life Sciences (launched 2018).Since joining KAUST in 2021, Professor Gallouzi has expanded KSHI's research capabilities through clinically driven programs and the KAUST Bioinnovation Platforms, including viral vector facilities, an induced Pluripotent Stem Cell facility, and a Biobank. He has fostered key partnerships through KSHI Annual Conferences and led the establishment of the first MD-PhD program in Saudi Arabia and the region, in collaboration with Alfaisal University in Riyadh.
