"Iconic president of one of the most competitive football league worldwide."
Javier Tebas Medrano, who studied law at the University of Zaragoza, has been Chairman of LALIGA since April 2013. He was re-elected to this position for a further four years in 2016, 2019 and 2023. He was previously elected Deputy Chairman of LALIGA in 2001 and in 2003 as a representative of the so-called G-30, a group comprising 30 LALIGA associations for the joint negotiation of their audiovisual rights.
Javier Tebas' presidency of LALIGA has focused on three key areas: economic oversight, the centralised sale of audiovisual rights and the internationalisation strategy for the competition.
The first great accomplishment of his presidency was to successfully control the finances of Spanish professional football, allowing clubs to reduce their debts and doing away with late payments to players.
Another major achievement during his tenure as Chairman was the centralised sale of audiovisual rights, through Royal Decree Law 5/2015, which has allowed all LALIGA clubs to significantly increase their revenues.
Since Tebas took over the management, internationalisation has been a key feature of LALIGA. It is based on three important pillars: a network of international offices (consisting of 11 branches worldwide), the extensive LALIGA Global Network of delegates (consisting of 44 members across five continents) and three Joint Ventures in different regions worldwide.
In addition, innovation, technological advancement and a data-driven approach centred on Business Intelligence and Analytics are an integral part of LALIGA's strategy and deeply rooted in the DNA of LALIGA and its clubs.
During his tenure as Chairman of LALIGA, Javier Tebas has actively engaged as a speaker and presenter in various global forums including Sportel, Web Summit, World Football Summit, Thinking Football Summit, FT Business of Football Summit, and Soccerex Miami, among others. He has served as a lecturer for numerous courses, master's programs, and university or private diplomas in the fields of commerce and sports (including institutions such as ISDE, Illustrious Bar Associations, Masters in Sports Law at the Real Madrid University School run by the Universidad Europea, LALIGA Business School, etc.).
Javier Tebas has been a practising lawyer since 1987. After he founded his own firm specialising in Corporate Law, he extended his areas of specialisation to Sports and Bankruptcy Law.
His first became directly involved with the world of football in 1993, when he was elected president of Sociedad Deportiva Huesca, a position he held until 1998 (when it played in the 3rd Division and Second Division B). Later, he became a director of C.D. Badajoz S.A.D. and C.D. Toledo S.A.D.
